COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences challenges you to explore the full breadth and depth of mathematical learning. You will:

  • learn from award-winning researchers and teachers in state-of-the-art facilities
  • build fundamental statistical and mathematical knowledge
  • hone your creativity, rigour, logical thinking, professionalism and research skills
  • delve into abstract theories that underpin modern science
  • create, collect, analyse and model data.

Majors are available in:

  • Applied mathematics
  • Pure mathematics
  • Statistics.

Where could it take you?

Our maths graduates go on to all sorts of fascinating careers in technology-led industries. You could crunch numbers for business start-ups as a data scientist or work on modelling to predict the weather. You might be an actuary, applying probability and statistics to insurance and banking. Perhaps you’ll design digital games or pursue rocket science.

Students commencing in July may have a slightly limited selection of courses.

Degree Structure:

Students take courses to the value of at least 72 units comprising a core mathematical sciences requirement together with a number of electives. Students must complete at least 18 units of level III courses chosen from Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Statistics together with Communication Skills.

A major is a great way to specialise and pursue topics of interest, without narrowing future career options. Majors are available in: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

Students who perform well can undertake an additional year of study to obtain an Honours Degree of the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences. An honours qualification is highly valued by employers and is suitable preparation for students who wish to proceed to postgraduate studies. The honours year includes a major project.

Areas of Specialisation

The Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences allows students to choose a specialisation in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Statistics.

Majors:

Applied Mathematics: Learn about mathematical theories and work on projects that apply mathematics to solve real-world problems.

Pure Mathematics: Study mathematics in its purest form. Delve into the abstract theories built by logical deduction that underpin modern science and technology.

Statistics: The Statistics major focusses on the creation, collection, modelling and analysis of data to draw conclusions, inform decision-making, solve problems and direct business development.
