COURSE DESCRIPTION

Make a positive impact to our world as an environmental engineer, applying your understanding of natural systems and technical engineering skills to find creative solutions to pressures facing our environment and sustainable development. In the Environmental Engineering major, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of the environmental challenges facing our world and how we can apply engineering practice to assess and manage the effects of human and other activity on the natural and built environment.

The growing need for environmental protection has created high demand for professional environmental engineers. You’ll gain detailed knowledge on environmental management and design, environmental risk assessment, ecological engineering and design, environmental modelling, oceanography, contaminant fate and transport, hydrology, environmental fluid mechanics and more. A strong emphasis is placed on developing strong analytical and research skills, in particular advanced numerical techniques.

Be guided by world leading academics specialising in oceanography, water engineering, waste management, sustainable engineering and site decontamination.

You’ll learn to

Develop a deep practical understanding of the core concepts of environmental engineering and extend this knowledge to more specialised areas such as oceanography, water engineering, waste management, sustainable engineering and site decontamination.

Research and develop new technologies and techniques to improve the environmental acceptability of engineering projects.

Design and operate processes to treat wastes to a standard acceptable for discharge and/or recycling (such as wastewater treatment or waste solidification).

Prepare reports and studies on the best approach to environmental management in new and existing engineering projects, taking into account environmentally sustainable economic activity and legal, environmental and industrial factors.

Work effectively in a team, bringing leadership and accountability to successfully solve real-world problems.

Why study Environmental Engineering?

You’ll make valuable connections with UWA’s industry partners including Water Corporation, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and other members of the environmental engineering industry advisory panel – giving your career a head start.

You’ll be joining a community of leaders making a real impact – UWA is ranked 21st in the world and 1st in Australia for Environmental Science and Engineering (ARWU 2022).

You’ll become an industry-ready environmental engineer, highly sought-after by employers in regulatory authorities, mining and construction companies, development organisations, consultancies and government agencies, as the awareness of environmental impacts of engineering projects continues to grow.
