COURSE DESCRIPTION
Nutritionists are scientists who promote improved human and planetary health through nutrition and sustainable food systems.
The Bachelor of Nutrition Science provides a strong grounding in nutritional science, including topics such as nutrition and exercise, community health nutrition, food chemistry, biochemistry and metabolism, as well as training in nutrition research, health promotion and food innovation.
Throughout the degree, students will have opportunities to consider the relationship between the food system and environmental sustainability are provided. The final year of the course includes four elective subjects designed to broaden knowledge and experiences (e.g. sports nutrition, marketing, entrepreneurship, Indigenous health, OR an overseas exchange). It also provides the opportunity for a minor to be completed. Graduates may apply for the credential of associate nutritionist with the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) and have the option to register as a registered nutritionist after three years’ work experience. Graduates are also eligible for membership as a registered public health nutritionist with the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), as well as a graduate member with the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST).
This degree is designed to meet the prerequisite requirements for admission into the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, which is required to be eligible for full membership of Dietitians Australia and the Accredited Practising Dietitian Credential.
Accreditation & professional recognition: The competencies for nutrition science set by the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) are met by the course. The course meets the requirements of the NSA for graduates to register as nutrition scientists, following 3 years of relevant work experience after graduation. Currently, nutrition science courses in Australia are not registered by a professional body. The program is designed to meet the prerequisites requirements for admission into the Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics, which is required to be eligible for the credential of Accrediting Practising Dietitian.
