COURSE DESCRIPTION
The UOW Bachelor of Performance and Theatre offers comprehensive, practice-based training in acting and stagecraft that enables students to become skilled performers and independent creators of their own work. It provides students with the opportunity to specialise in directing at an Honours level, attain skills in technical theatre and to participate behind the scenes in a production context.
Students develop critical analytical expertise through the study of theatre and performance practice in a historical and contemporary context. Through its unique combination of practical training and exposure to the Australian and international performing arts sector, the degree equips students to enter a broad range of creative professions and to shape future directions in the field.
In the first year, students will focus on acting training and are introduced to lighting and sound prior to developing their skills through simulated work environments in their production subjects in the proceeding years.
In their production subjects, students work with professional writers and directors to develop new theatre work to present in a public context. This experience enables students to apply their skills in acting, directing, stage management or design to a real-world context and gain an understanding of professional practice standards in the industry.
Alongside practical training, students acquire research, written and oral communication skills that enhance their employment options upon graduation. In addition, students can study electives in singing, scriptwriting, lighting design, screen media and music production.
