COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Medical Science prepares you for a career in a range of laboratory roles, as well as providing an avenue for further study including graduate research programs.

This degree will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the basic sciences underpinning human health, wellbeing and its application to human disease. Enrolment in this degree has you selecting from one of three areas as your primary major: Biomedical Science, Human Nutrition or Anatomy and Physiology. The Biomedical Science major focuses on the cellular, molecular and genetic biology aspects of health and disease. The Human Nutrition major uses biology, chemistry and physiology to develop concepts in food and nutrient form and function in relation to human metabolism and physiology, while the Anatomy and Physiology major focuses on the anatomy and physiology of the human body in relation to health and disease.

Graduates of this program go on to work in a range of settings including medical research laboratories, hospital laboratories and in pathology laboratories. Studying medical science can also lead to positions in the pharmaceutical, medical sales and various research and quality control laboratories. If you’re looking at graduate study options, this degree provides an ideal platform for further research programs as well as medicine and pharmacy programs.

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Anatomy and Physiology Major within the Bachelor of Medical Science will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the basic sciences underpinning human health, wellbeing and its application to human disease. This major provides a strong focus on the anatomy and physiology of the human body in relation to health and disease. The degree also allows for enrolment in a variety of minors (with choices such as Microbiology, Environmental Health and Infectious Diseases) or free electives, so students can design their own learning journey. This major will provide you with the core knowledge in human anatomy and physiology and will allow you unlimited options of employment in areas such as academia, government, research, health and have you well prepared for further postgraduate studies in any medical and health related fields including but not limited to physiotherapy, radiology, sonography, paramedicine or medicine.

REQUIREMENTS

Students must have Successful completion of Year 12 or an equivalent qualification.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS: 6.5 overall score (min 6.0 in each subtest); TOEFL internet-based score of 82: Writing 21, Speaking 18, Reading 13, Listening 13; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): 58 overall; No communication skills less than 50.
